When I woke the next morning Miss Amaley Bernhard was still unconscious and her doctors had no idea when she would be up. I had a whole day ahead of me and could no longer maintain my bedside vigil. I called up records and found her next of kin, Amariss Bernhard - her mother in New Hampshire.
"Hello Mrs. Bernhard.."
"Yes, this is she. Can I help you, mister.."
"Detective Proulx, 5th precinct, New York City.. Ma'am, I am at the St.Vincent's Midtown Hospital where your daughter, Amaley, is currently admitted.. She's unconscious at the moment and there's not much more the doctors will tell anyone but next of kin.."
I expected a flurry of why's and how's or something though nothing so far has been typical. "I will be there in a couple of hours, detective. Thank you for notifying me.."
I probably should have awkwardly blurted that her daughter was under investigation and is currently under watch by police but I needed a coffee and ,damn, she hung up on me abruptly..
