We got a call from upstairs to go support a bomb removal unit at lower end Cardiff. About 2 units got there at the same time and met with the custodian of the building, Mr. Jerods, who wouldn't stop hollering about some crazy kid on the 6th floor who had some bomb set up in his living room. We proceeded cautiously to the sixth floor and attempted to open dialog with the suspicious tenant. After denying us any access to the apartment we proceeded to batter the door down. The door had been nailed shut and took several runs before the door was successfully run down.
The prime unit led a run though the apartment which was virtually empty except for this police box that sat at the center of the flat's living room. The box had to be an antique and was once used by police post World War II to wire in emergencies to the local precinct. It was grayish blue stood well over 8 feet and occupied a good 4 foot square of floor space. Authentic lettering across the top of the entrance identified it to be the police box of old and a weathered sign on the left hand double door explained how to call in an incident.
We had the bomb units check around the box out for traps. We then tried the front double doors of the box with no success. It appeared to be powered since the translucent sign over the doors and the tiny square windows on each of the doors were lit. The several officers who tried listening for signs of life with in the box on the scene claim to have heard a faint hum from within the box. Not knowing what else to do we tried to batter the front doors of the box which remarkably wouldn't scratch or even crack at the apparently glass windows.
Bomb squad called in a transport unit. They were planning to take it to the quarry where they would continue to break into the box safely away from downtown Cardiff. Just as the truck rolled up front the box started to emanate a strange rumbling from with in. We thought the box was preparing to explode and rushed all units to evacuate the building. The rumbling was increasing in intensity and at this point sounded like wind blowing through rough chasms.
The units below had already evacuated the neighborhood block and by the time we had reached the hastily made barricade at the end of the block the noise from the 6th floor apartment had dissapated. Bomb squad units rushed back in. After a few tense minutes of waiting the unit radioed in their status. The box was gone..
